How To Begin The Process of Vaginal Cosmetic Surgery And What To Expect
You’ve evaluated, researched, checked credentials and you’ve finally decided that you want to get this vaginal tightening procedure done. Your next step is the consult. Sometimes you pay for this service, sometimes it’s not charged for by the surgeon—they all differ. So, how do you start?
That’s easy . . . follow these simple steps:
-
If you choose, simply call Dr. Stern directly at 888.496.9122. He does NOT charge for a consultation. Or, call Shirley or Nancy in Dr. Stern’s Alexandria office at 703.845.7406. You can also call Nancy in Dr. Stern’s Miami office at 305-933-6960, or Leslie in the Jupiter/Palm Beach office at 561-795-3787. They will give you all the information you need to start and guide you through the simple steps to getting the surgery you want, performed.
-
Dr. Stern’s Alexandria, Virginia office is a $200 plane flight from anywhere in the continental United States. His surgery center is 10 minutes from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. His Aventura office is equally close to Fort Lauderdale or Miami Airports, at approximately the same cost. And, you can easily get to his office in Palm Beach from the Palm Beach International Airport. He typically does anywhere from three to four cases per day on women from all over the world. Because so many of my patients are from out of state, both of his offices are very skilled at assisting you with consultation, travel, and surgery plans.
-
Most women fly in the day before surgery by two pm and he will meet with you. For your safety, if you have not had medical clearance from your private M.D., he will have arranged clearance for you when you arrive. After evaluation, if Dr. Stern believes you are a good candidate for surgery you will then continue with the rest of the pre-operative staging. Please be aware that there is always a chance that upon meeting with Dr. Stern, he may decide not to perform surgery if he believes you are not a good candidate. Dr. Stern will then do a medical history and physical, draw laboratory specimens, review medical consents and forms with you, call in your necessary pre-surgical medications, and take a set of digital photographs. He will immediately view the photos on a monitor with you and custom design exactly, with your input, what you would like to look like after the surgery is finished.
-
You will then stay overnight at one of several hotels that his staff may have recommended to you. The next morning is your surgery. Dr. Stern will take the computer-generated digital pre-operative photos that were taken the day before, and post them on an electronic screen in the Operating Room. In addition, prior to entering the OR and anesthesia, he will mark your labia and/or vagina along proposed lines of dissection, and he’ll again review the desired results that you both agreed upon. You’ll be taken to the OR and he’ll perform the surgery. It will take him about an hour. After your surgery you’ll be taken to the Recovery Room where specially trained nurses will monitor your vital signs until the anesthesia has worn off until you are ready to leave (usually in an hour or so). Then, you’ll be released and returned to your hotel.
-
Later that day, a nurse will check on you and Dr. Stern will check on you as well. He will also see you the next morning at his office before you fly out. He will check your condition and apply new dressings (bandages) as appropriate. He’ll also give you instructions, both written and verbally, concerning your post-operative condition, including advice on your daily routine and activities. Then, you’re free to go home.
-
Typically, recovery after vaginal rejuvenation is LESS stressful than a second child delivery. Vaginoplasty is generally a SLIGHTLY more complex surgery than labiaplasty, but the basic post-operative instructions are similar. You’ll usually need 2-3 days of rest—icing the surgical area for the first 48-72 hours—then heat afterwards if there is minor swelling. Showering and dabbing the surgical area dry and applying antibiotic ointment to the external stitches is recommended. Most patients return to work in 2-3 days unless they do combination vaginoplasty/labiaplasty, which requires 6-7 days off work. There should be no strenuous exercise for twenty-three (23) days. After that, bathing or Sitz bathes will help the stitches dissolve—return to normal exercise and activity is permitted at this point. At four (4) weeks post-op the use of a small toy, vaginally, is recommended to dilate the vaginal canal—acclimating oneself to the newly rejuvenated vagina. If the use of a vaginal dilator is comfortable, then a return to gentle sexual activity at 5 ½-6 weeks is the norm. Complete healing is thirteen (13) weeks as with any surgery. Rarely, (less than 8%) is there a 2nd stage need for additional tightening or loosening. Prophylactic antibiotics are also prescribed but infection is generally very, very low, usually less than 5% of all cases.
During your healing process, Dr. Stern will be in contact with you by telephone so he can monitor your progress. He is also available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for any questions you might have about your condition. If a problem arises that your surgeon feels cannot be handled by telephone contact, he’ll instruct you to check with your family doctor or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
